Prospective students must complete all Admissions Requirements as well as the program portfolio and audition requirements to be considered for admission.

Applicants applying to the Instrumental Arts, VoiceArts, or Performer-Composer BFA and MFA programs are required to participate in an in-person audition/interview. The audition is a chance for our faculty to get to know you and to ask and answer questions. You may present materials from your portfolio or new pieces at the audition.

After submitting your application, you will gain access to sign up for an audition location in one of several locations listed below. We will then contact you with an audition time and more information about the audition. If you cannot attend an in-person interview/audition, we will treat your portfolio as your audition, and, If needed by our faculty, we will contact you about scheduling a 15-minute virtual interview on a later date. It is the responsibility of the applicant to schedule an audition and to complete all of the application requirements.

For Fall 2024 applicants, live auditions will be hosted in the following locations:

    • Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024
      • CalArts Campus

    • Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024

    • Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024
      • Traverse City/Interlochen, MI

    • Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024
      • Dallas, TX

Applicants applying to the Performer-Composer DMA program will be contacted if they have been selected as a finalist for the second stage of the application process. The second stage auditions will take place in February.

The Composition & Experimental Sound Practices, Experimental Pop, Jazz, Music Technology, and World Music BFA and MFA programs do not hold required auditions. We will review your application, and, if needed by our faculty, we will contact you about scheduling a 15-minute virtual interview.
