To audition virtually, you must meet our requirements* below.


URTA Participants (MFA Only):To be considered for admission, you must submit an application to CalArts. When completing the application, please note you are an URTA participant. In order to mitigate your costs, on the application we ask that you provide us with your Acceptd Profile ID to receive a fee waiver.

If you receive a callback after your URTA audition, please bring one (1) copy of your headshot (portrait orientation preferred) and resume to the session.

In-Person Audition Information (BFA/MFA)

After you submit your application, you will be asked to sign up for a live audition. Please bring one (1) copy of your headshot (portrait orientation preferred) and resume to the audition.

Additionally, all applicants auditioning both in-person and virtually must submit their audition form no later than 1 week prior to their audition date. The audition form can be found in your application portal.

Monologue Requirements:
  • Applicants must present two (2) monologues of contrasting nature, each no longer than two minutes in length. 
  • One (1) must be from Shakespeare and one (1) must be from a Contemporary published play.**
  • These monologues should also be recorded and uploaded to the portfolio section of the application as individual files (You may view our requirements for Self Tapes here: Self Tape Filming Guidelines)

**Should faculty wish to see an additional piece, we ask that you have 1 additional monologue in reserve (Contemporary or Shakespeare). This piece does not need to be recorded or added to your portfolio as part of your online application.

* Virtual Audition Information

You must qualify by meeting one of the following criteria: 
  1. You are an International Student residing outside of the Contiguous US and DC. 
  2. You are residing in the US but are located outside the contiguous US and DC (Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico).

Note: Those who reside within the 48 contiguous states and DC must attend a live in-person audition in Los Angeles, New York City, or Chicago. There are no exceptions.
