Audition Requirements & Next Steps
Deadlines: All applicants (in-person and virtual) must submit their Audition Form in the application portal at least 1 week prior to their audition date.
Headshot & Resume: Bring one physical copy to your in-person audition (or URTA callback session). Format: 8"x10", stapled back-to-back, with a portrait-orientation headshot.
Monologue Guidelines:
Prepare two contrasting monologues, each under 2 minutes:
- One (1) Shakespeare monologue
- One (1) Contemporary published play monologue (written late 20th century to present)
- Record and upload both monologues as individual files in your application portfolio (see our Self-Tape Filming Guidelines).
- Keep one (1) additional monologue (Shakespeare or Contemporary) in reserve for faculty request. This reserve piece does not need to be recorded.
To request a virtual audition, select "Virtual Audition" when submitting your application. The faculty review committee will evaluate your application portfolio and self-tapes before issuing formal Virtual audition invitations to selected applicants.
- Finality of Decisions: All pre-screen evaluations are final. Applicants who are not invited to a virtual audition cannot opt for a live, in-person audition instead.
- Attendance: If selected through pre-screening, you must register for and complete your scheduled virtual audition to remain under admissions consideration.
- Admissions Status: An audition invitation confirms next-step eligibility only; it does not constitute an offer of admission or guarantee admission.
- Submit a standard CalArts application indicating your URTA status to receive an automatic fee waiver.
- We prefer URTA participants to submit their application prior to attending their URTA event when possible.
- Bring one copy of your headshot and resume to your callback session if selected.
